A TALE OF TWO LEGACIES

The concept of a ‘legacy’ seems almost old fashioned in an increasingly disposable world but the thoroughbred racing industry often bucks the trend. Rich with living history, it’s founded on the knowledge that you cannot buy or freely inherit a legacy. Instead, it must be earned and preserved with hard work and passion. So the recent announcement that Monovale Farm will stand its champion racehorse Puccini at Mapperley Stud is hugely exciting. The development represents the joining of two legacies; upheld by a new generation eager to carry the torch. Puccini, the winner of seven Group races, including the 2014 Group 1 New Zealand Derby and the 2015 Group 1 Thorndon Mile, was bred, owned, and

PUCCINI BOOSTS MAPPERLEY ROSTER

Under the management of Simms Davison, He’s Remarkable revived Mapperley’s place in the breeding industry when he took up duties at the Matamata farm in 2013, followed two years later by the ill-fated Atlante. Last year in partnership with Godolphin, Contributer and Complacent took up duties, and now Encosta de Lago’s classic-winning son Puccini will add further strength to the Mapperley roster. Puccini was bred and raced by the late Paul Smithies and his wife Cushla, who have a relationship with Mapperley Stud going back to the first star performer they bred, multiple Group One winner Sir Slick, who was by former Mapperley stallion Volksraad. MARES IN FOAL TO DUAL GR.1 WINNER CONTRIBUTER IN HIGH DEMAND AT NZB 2017 NZB BROODMARE SALE

With an exclusively limited number of mares in-foal to Contributer offered at this weeks NZB Broodmare sale, buyers entered into spirited bidding to secure the lots available. Fetching the second highest priced broodmare at the sale was Grandissima (Lot 384) who held a positive pregnancy test to Contributer and was knocked down for a cool $85,000 to the bid of The Sunlight Trust. A young Stakes performed Savabeel mare, Grandissima is closely related to Gr.1 winners Press Statement and Press Day and is a half-sister to Group winners The Mighty Lions and Marenostro. Grandissima is typical of the quality of mares who filled Contributer’s first book in 2016 and we expect to see the quality shine

2017 SERVICE FEES SET

Headlining the Mapperley Stud stallion roster again this year is Champion Australian Middle Distance Horse of the Year Contributer (High Chaparral). Standing at a fee of $12,500 plus gst (LFG), Contributer offers an incredible opportunity to breeders who are eager to access High Chaparral’s best performed son who is standing at stud in New Zealand. An unbelievably talented racehorse, Contributer is a dual Gr.1 winner , 5-time Stakes winner and has a pedigree to die for. Supported by an enviable book of mares in 2016, Contributer will no doubt be represented by an impressive first crop of foals this Spring. Dominant Gr.1 Spring Champion Stakes winner Complacent (Authorized) will stand his se
