COMPLACENT RUNNING HOT

Complacent was an elite 3 year-old in Australia winning the Gr.1 Spring Champion Stakes and the Gr.3 Gloaming Stakes before running a fast-finishing 2nd in the VRC Derby. He showed he was competitive against the best horses in Australia as an older horse winning the Gr.2 Chelmsford Stakes and Gr.3 Craven Plate beating Gr.1 superstars Hartnell, Kermadec, Criterion and Royal Descent. Well-known for his tenacity and his will to win, Complacent was well supported by New Zealand breeders when he was retired to stud back in 2016.

With his eldest now 3 year-olds, the emerging young sire is starting to produce some very talented gallopers who look like they have promising careers ahead. Comme Belle Fille was the first filly to display her talents when she came from last at Matamata and burst through the field to win with absolute ease for trainer Catherine Cameron.

Leading racing syndicators OTI Racing were quickly on the phone and secured her in a deal where she would join the John O’Shea Stable in Sydney. In the hands of the highly regarded Sydney horseman, she stepped up to a staying trip for the first time yesterday at Wyong and she absolutely blew her opposition away with a mesmerising performance. She looks like a filly with immense ability who could work her way towards some nice races in the spring.

Cork was the next one out of the bottle when she was a dominant 9 length winner at Matamata. Trained by leading duo Michael Moroney & Pam Gerard, she was progressing nicely with two lead up runs and the step up to 1600m was right up her alley as she exploded away for an arrogant victory.

Another 3 year-old filly who captured attention was Bronzba when she missed the star by 3 lengths on debut but still found a way to weave her way through the field to snatch an improbably victory. It was an enormous effort, she looks to be an ultra-sharp filly and leading Central Districts trainer Kevin Myers will no doubt have some lofty targets for her in the future.

Complacent’s recent hot streak on the track has him warming up late in the season and is positioned to finish off on a high. Earlier in the year, Complacent achieved good commercial results at the NZB Karaka Yearling sales with his top lot selling for $70,000 to Paul Moroney and ending the sale with a strong median of $30,000.

Standing at $4,000+gst in 2021, Complacent remains one of the best value sires in New Zealand. A tough and courageous Gr.1 winner in Australia, he could be the perfect selection for your mare this upcoming season.
