TRAINER TIPPING MARE TO ADD TO FAMILY RECORD

NZ Racing Desk

Tony Pike knows Nomisma’s family well and believes she is capable of emulating the deeds of her older brother.

The Cambridge trainer produced the daughter of Thorn Park for a first-up success in the Bay Ford NZ Punter the Year 1200 at Hastings on Saturday for breeder-owner Simms Davison, of Mapperley Stud.

“We’ve always thought that she was a Group class mare and once the penny really drops with her then there’s a nice race in her,” Pike said.

He trained her sibling Sacred Park to win three of his eight starts as a three-year-old, including the Gr.2 Wellington Guineas and the Gr.3 Bonecrusher Stakes, before he relocated to Hong Kong where he raced as Joyful Park.

Nomisma appreciated the hot early tempo set up by Morse Code on Saturday and she was able to reel in the on-speed runners with a strong finishing burst from the top of the straight.

“The pace suited her and it was just a case of her picking them up and then fighting off the favourite,” said Kelly McCulloch, who picked up the ride when Leith Innes was unable to make the 54kg.

Nomisma posted the fourth win of her 13 start career at the expense of Let Her Rip, who also settled off the speed, and third placegetter Mr Knowitall was another to be doing his best work late.

The five-year-old is now an $18 chance in the early market for the Gr.2 Coupland’s Bakeries Mile at Riccarton on November 9. – NZ Racing Desk.
