Mapperley Stud graduate Brutal turned out a super impressive performance to win the Gr.1 Doncaster Handicap at Randwick on Saturday. Following on from his 2nd to the wonder mare Winx in the Gr.1 George Ryder Stakes he was heavily supported in the market and was ultimately backed into favouritism at the jump. With Glen Boss on board, he positioned the talented 3yo son of O’Reilly outside the leader and settled him in a good rhythm in the early stages. Approaching the bend he increased the tempo and lengthened quickly in the home straight to fight off the older horses over the famous Randwick Mile. “He’s a very good horse, it was a soft victory. He’s so relaxed, he’s all quality” said jockey Glen Boss. Trained by Hawkes Racing the colt has now won 4 of 7starts and is quickly establishing himself as an exciting stallion prospect. “He’s been a rock star since the get go” said Wayne Hawkes. Purchased from the 2017 Premier Yearling sale draft for $220,000 by Hawkes Racing, stud master Simms Davison said “He was one of the stand out colts from our draft that year, he moved wonderfully and had a real presence about him. It’s fantastic to see Hawkes Racing get this fabulous result with him.
