LION'S ROAR CAPS OFF PREPARATION WITH GR.1 PLACING

Champion Thoroughbreds

Lion's Roar gave his ownership group an incredible thrill on Saturday when fighting out the finish to place 2nd in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes at Royal Randwick.

The 3YO son of Contributer was having just his 5th career start when tackling the major assignment and raised the bar yet again to maintain his near perfect race record of 5 starts , 3 wins and 2 placings.

Purchased for $65,000 as a yearling for the 2018 NZB Premier Sale, Lion's Roar has now earned his connections over $240k in prizemoney from a handful of race starts.

On the 7 day back-up from his win at Newcastle, Lion's Roar entered the race as an $18 chance in the field of 13 runners. He showed his usual good gate speed from barrier 7 and was able to settle 3 pairs back in the running and travelled beautifully throughout. The race panned out perfectly for him and with most horses off the bit around the home turn, Lion's Roar was still travelling strongly on the bridle for jockey Brenton Avdulla. He was left in front a long way from home with the race favourite Love Tap dropping off quicker than expected and for a fleeting moment Lion's Roar looked the winner.

Group 1 Flight Stakes winner Montefilia who was also on the 7 day back-up from that win, peeled out from behind Lion's Roar's heels and was able to gun him down over the last 25m to win by 0.8L. The two gave an almighty sight leaving the rest of their rivals 4 lengths behind!

Lion's Roar will now head to the paddock for a break before being aimed at the Randwick Guineas in the Autumn.
