Wolfgang has always shown trainer Peter Mckay an abundance of talent from an early stage. He started off his 2 year-old campaign admirably, running eventual champion 2 year-old Sword of State to a close nose on the first day of juvenile trials.
The son of emerging young sire Puccini then displayed his natural ability when he was narrowly beaten by Quatro Quinta (Darci Brahma) in the Listed Wellesley stakes after being caught 4-wide throughout the race.
He followed that up with another bold effort to run 3rd in the Group 3 Woburn Farm 2YO Classic and finished his 2 year-old campaign with a solid effort in the Gr.1 Manawatu Sires Produce.
With spring racing starting to heat up, the promising 3 year-old has been impressing in his work ahead of his upcoming campaign.
“His work has been even better this time in, he’s more switched on. He is going as well as any other 3 year-old that I have had at this stage of their preparation”
“We will go down to Hawkes Bay on the first day of the carnival, the 1200 listed race looks like an ideal starting point”
“We will see where he takes us from there, but the main aim with him is the 2000 Guineas at Riccarton”
His sire Puccini was crowned Champion 3 year-old Horse of Year after a dominant season against his own age-group where he won 3 Guineas races and the Group 1 New Zealand Derby.
“I’m looking forward his 3 year-old campaign, he’s going to have to step up again, but he’s a smooth moving colt and he’s going to appreciate a firm deck” said McKay
“I think he’s a little sharper than Puccini, he could be a more of miler, but he could push out further later on in his prep”
