Champion son of Galileo, Armory, has made an exciting start to his stud career, siring his first Australian winner when the promising three-year-old Armorware claimed victory over 1200m in the opening race on Sale Cup Day.

Armorware had shown encouraging signs at his first two starts, including a strong performance over 1000 metres at Mornington running 2nd to Parcae, a half sister to multiple Gr.1 winner Tentyris.

Jockey Daniel Stackhouse was pleased to see the gelding capitalise on a favourable draw to secure his maiden victory.

“First couple of runs have been good, he run very well at Mornington over 1000m, gates just haven’t been in his favour” said Stackhouse

“Drawn one today, we could be a bit more positive, he’s still a bit green and raw, still learning his craft but he got a lovely run through and kicked well, got a bit lost when he hit the lead but he’s got a lot of potential going forward”

Stackhouse has plenty of confidence in the talented 3 year-old with the best still ahead for Armorware, predicting the young horse will continue to improve as he steps up in distance.

“He’s going to be a better horse once he gets out to 1400m or a mile, he’s going to keep on improving”

Trained at Mornington by Matt Laurie, Armorware is raced by Rick & Joan Smith who purchased him out of the Ardsley Stud Book 2 draft at New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sale for $45,000.

Out of the Showcasing mare Showmeware, he was bred by his vendors Ardsley Stud.

Armorware now joins the likes of multiple stakes performed filly Silhouette and the unbeaten The Armorer as exciting racing prospects for the promising young sire.

“It’s great to see his 3 year-olds hitting the track in Australia and for them to be winning over 1200m is very encouraging, as we know they are going to get even better as they get up over distance” said Stud Master Simms Davison.

“Armory was a gun three year-old who continued to get better with age, so we know they have the scope to continue on improving deeper into their classic season”

Armory finished 2nd in the W.S Cox Plate as a 3 year-old in his only Australian start for legendary trainer Aiden O’Brien. On his return to Europe, he was crowned champion 3 year-old in Ireland & Europe and continued to add further accolades such as Champion Older Horse in Ireland before retiring to stud.

Armory stands for a fee of $10,000+gst in 2026.
