PROFONDO MAKES AN EARLY IMPRESSION WITH FIRST TRIAL WINNER
Profondo has made an exciting early impression on the racetrack, with Wildcatter (ex Mary D’Or) becoming the stallion’s first trial winner in an encouraging sign for the young sire at Waipa on Thursday.
Bred by Elsdon Park, Wildcatter wore the familiar Elsdon Park colours and is trained by Peter and Shaun McKay, making the result a particularly pleasing one for his connections.
With Profondo’s oldest progeny only two-year-olds, the trial win marks an exciting start for the Group 1-winning son of Deep Impact as his first crop begins its journey on the track.
“It is an exciting start for Profondo. We have had fantastic reports around the traps about his progeny having great actions and temperaments, but to have a pre-Christmas 2YO trial winner is very exciting. He did it on his ear, and the fact that the saddle slipped at the start just adds more to the trial win, which was the fastest 2YO heat of the day,” commented Rodney Schick.
“Profondo is a son of the legendary Deep Impact, and Profondo’s dam, Honesty Prevails, was very precocious. She was a Group-winning 2YO in Sydney and ran 5th in the Golden Slipper. All reports were that he was a jet as a 2YO himself, so we are not surprised to see them run early.”
Profondo’s progeny have already attracted plenty of attention in the sales ring, fetching prices of $425,000, $400,000 and $375,000 etc. at Karaka yearling sales.
A $1.9 million yearling himself, Profondo announced his arrival at the highest level when winning the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes at just his third career start, demonstrating the class and precocity that made him such a highly sought-after prospect.
Your next opportunity to purchase progeny by Profondo is at NZB Ready to Run sale where he has 12 lots selling.
Profondo stands in 2026 at a fee of $17,500.
